Tathagata Roy (born 14 September 1945) is one of the most respected political figures of Bengal. He served as the Governor of Tripura from 2015 to 2018 and the Governor of Meghalaya from August 2018 to the end of his term in August 2020. He was the 6th president of West Bengal state unit of Bharatiya Janata Party from 2002 to 2006, and a member of the BJP National Executive from 2002 until 2015. However, due to his forthright views based on honest appraisal of the political situation in Bengal, he has been sidelined by the BJP leadership.

An engineer by training, Roy is a former professor of construction engineering and the founder-head of the department of engineering at Jadavpur University.

Following the sudden decision to Partition India in 1947, the genocidal violence unleashed in Bengal was no less cataclysmic than the violence in the north western regions of undivided India. And yet, Hindu victims of the Partition of Bengal have received far less attention than the Punjabi and Sindhi refugees of 1947. This is not to suggest that the Government of India of those days, ever gave due attention to healing the traumas of even Hindus and Sikhs who had to flee as penniless refugees their ancestral homes in the region arbitrarily declared as Pakistan. But Bengalis seemed to have been neglected even more callously.

This is especially puzzling because Bengalis of that era played a leading role in the freedom movement which culminated in the bloody Partition and also produced many outstanding public intellectuals and literary figures. Tathagat Roy,a leading political figure of Bengal , who was also Governor of Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh, will talk about that cataclysmic period.
