More than five decades after his death, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s legacy remains fiercely contested. In his own life time, he earned the title of “Veer” for his extraordinary courage and unswerving determination to free India from colonial rule.
He was revered by most contemporary freedom fighters. Many like Bhagat Singh drew their inspiration from him. His critics in the Nehruvian Congress and left parties allege that Savarkar was connected to the 1948 assassination of Gandhi. They dispute his role in the Indian freedom struggle and condemn his advocacy of a “Hindu Rashtra”.
In 1948, Veer Savarkar was charged as a co-conspirator in the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by the Nehru Government. However, he was acquitted by the court for lack of evidence. Nehru Govt did not challange the verdict in high court because all the evidence was in favour of Savarkar. And yet, leftists and Islamists won’t give up defaming him. In this episode, we find out about his equation with Godse and the reason behind Savarkar’s name being maliciously dragged into the Gandhi murder case by the Nehru Government.
